ESLF COMMENCES GEF-SGP ENVIRONMENT-BASED PROJECT TO PROMOTE BIODIVERSITY, TRADITIONAL MEDICINE PRACTICE.

Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF) has commenced implementation of an environment-based project aimed to encourage practices that preserve biodiversity loss and to promote the age-long practice of traditional medicine preparation to cure ailments among the people of Ugbe, in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

The project whose goal is to reduce the loss of biodiversity and promote the transmission of sustainable traditional medicinal practices among the indigenous people of Ugbe Community is sponsored by Global Environment Facility Small Grants Project (GEF-SGP).

Explaining the project during a community advocacy visit to the people of Ugbe, the Project Officer, Caleb Anber, pointed out the dangers of indiscriminate felling of trees especially those that serve as raw materials for traditional medicine and charged community members to own the project by being in the vanguard to protect their natural habitat.

Responding, District Head of the people of Ugbe, the Tyoor Moon Chief Gabriel Awua Wende expressed delight about the project which would promote the enterprise of his people and expressed willingness to support it to succeed.

Highpoints of the engagement with the community was setting up of a Project Implementation Committee (PIC) made up of 6 male and 6 female which would help drive the process to fruition.

The theme of the project is, Addressing Biodiversity Loss and Promoting Sustainable Traditional Medicinal Practices among the Ugbe Indigenous People of Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria”.

The foremost objective of ESLF is “to contribute to the improvement of the health of the people of Benue State and beyond”. This GEF-SGF-funded project, aimed at promoting traditional medicine practice, currently running in Kwande, fits perfectly into this core objective.
