About Us

Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF), is a non-governmental organization set up to support development efforts in Benue State and beyond, from a non-political, non religious and non profit making standpoint without bias to race or creed. The organization is operating in health, education, governance, and economic empowerment with a focus on agriculture and environment with stakeholders across the 23 LGAs of Benue State and beyond towards contributing to the improvement of the health of the people of Benue State, contributing to creating access to quality education for the less privileged and needy, contributing to promoting good and inclusive governance in Benue State and beyond, promoting improved agricultural production for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable and promoting youth engagement in agric-business through capacity building, resource mobilization, advocacy, research and partnerships.

Our Track record

HEALTH
WASH Interventions

  • As member of the Benue State Action Committee on COVID-19, we have been engaged in surveillance and risk communication on COVID-19 across Benue State since March, 2020 till date.
  • Reached over 8000 persons with awareness on COVID -19, Menstrual Hygiene and other health issues and distributed palliatives to 2150 vulnerable persons comprising widows, the elderly and Persons with Disabilities in 8 LGAs across Benue State (June, 2020)
  • Created awareness on COVID-19 and Menstrual Hygiene and trained 50 Persons with Disabilities on the making of hand wash soap, hand sanitisers, facemasks and reusable sanitary pads in partnership with United Purpose (June, 2020)
  • Awareness creation on COVID-19 and MHHM and the institution of Champions at Ushongo Town, Benue State (2020)
  • Awareness on COVID-19 in 3 Secondary Schools in Gboko and Kwande LGAs, Benue State (2020)
  • Worked with Kom’Bak Industries to invent, demonstrate and pilot the use of Hydrotech, a non-complex, low cost, solar powered water purification innovation for use in rural communities.
  • Created awareness on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and ided MHM materials to women and girls displaced by the herdsmen crises at the Gbajimba IDP Camp, Guma LGA, Benue State, Nigeria (2018)
  • With funding from UNICEF, through CSO-B, we implemented a WASH-in Emergencies Programme for IDPs at the Daudu II IDP Camp in Guma LGA Benue State. Trained the WASHCOM and offered supportive supervision to WASHCOM to keep the camps clean (2018)
  • Built capacity of staff through a training of trainers workshop on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) organised by WSSCC (2019)
  • Created awareness and trained 198 in-school adolescent girls and boys, teachers and parents at Government Secondary School Agasha on MHM and making of reusable sanitary pads (2019). Also donated MHM materials to girls.
  • Awareness and institution of MHHM Champions at Uchen Community, Benue State (2020)
  • With Funding from United Purpose, we organised a Breakfast Meeting for 50 state and non-state stakeholders in the WASH Sector in Benue State (2019)
  • Contributed to awareness creation and demonstration of handwashing during the Global Handwashing Day event organised by United Purpose in Abuja (2019)
  • Commenced implementation of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) triggering to open defecation in Kpeifi 2 community in Makurdi.
  • Conducted an assessment of the knowledge of farmers, traders, fishermen, and excavators along the River Benue on plastic waste disposal, management and effects to mark the 2018 World Environment Day. Also interfaced with the State waste management agency and a private sector recycling firm to deepen talks on plastic waste recycling.

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV/AIDs

  • Implemented a UNFPA funded project to manage Safe Spaces in conflict affected communities of Abeda and Ugba in Logo LGA, Benue State. ESLF provided mentoring, skills acquisition, psychosocial support and referral services for 503 in-community and displaced adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) was a key module in the mentoring manual used.
  • With funding from UNFPA, through Benue State Planning Commission, we implemented a Train-the-Trainers workshop for 30 boys and girls living with disabilities in conflict affected communities on their sexual and reproductive health rights (July, 2019)
  • Carried out HIV counselling, testing and referral services for 12,522 adolescents and young people aged 9-25 years across 21 LGAs in Benue State.
  • Implemented a range of media, in-school, IDP Camp and community awareness campaign activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in Benue State
  • Sponsored and hosted two meetings for Adolescent and Young People (AYP) in partnership with BENSACA to address HIV/AIDs
  • We partnered FIDA Benue and other NGOs to carryout advocacy which led to the passage and signing of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Benue State in 2019
  • Partnered MSF to train health workers on case management of survivors of Sexual and Gender based violence at their different health facilities.

Drug/Substance Abuse and Maternal and Child Health

  • Sponsored rehabilitation services for 4 young persons who are victims of drug abuse at NDLEA, Benue and Quintessential Health Centre, Jos
  • Established an ESLF Health and Skills Facility (ESLF – HSF ), comprising a Comprehensive Drug Abuse Rehabilitation Centre, Skills Acquisition Center and a Maternal and Child health Center in Makurdi. (2023)
  • Created awareness Campaigns for Schools on War Against Drug Abuse (WADA). (2022).

General Health Programmes/Cancer

  • The Foundation conducted Ward-to-Ward Free Mega Medical Outreaches ( its third phase) designed to reach all the 276 council wards in 23 LGAs of Benue State. So far, the Foundation has been able to reach over 74,000 needy persons across 117 Council Wards in the 10 LGAs of (Ado, Tarka, Kwande, Otukpo, Gwer East, Oju, Konshisha, Ohimini, Ushongo and Vandeikya) with over 71,000 free consultations and drugs and 3,525 surgeries. Daily health talks on personal/ menstrual hygiene and sexual health are an integral component of the outreach programme.
  • Partnered the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BENSEMA) to implement a free medical outreach programme for IDPs in Agatu LGA, Benue State (2019)
  • Past and ongoing partnership with Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Benue State to implement cancer awareness, prevention, testing, treatment and care programmes (2017 till date)
  • Mobilised and distributed food and non-food items to IDPs in Benue State
  • Treatment of over 50 VVF Cases at Bishop Murray Medical Center, Makurdi in partnership with ECWA Hospital, Jos.
  • Donated 2 ultrasound scanning machines, one each to Fr. Matthias Hospital, Naka and St. Veronica’s Health Clinic, Aondona both rural health facilities in Gwer West LGA, Benue State to promote maternal and child health.
  • ESLF has also acquired land to build and establish an oncology center to help with the prevention and treatment of cancer.
  • Participated in the Community Health Influencers, Promoters and Services (CHIPS) training workshop towards the implementation of the CHIPS Programme in Benue State (2019)
  • ESLF implemented a Victim Support Fund ( VSF) funded project on mental health and psycho social support psychological first aid at Anyiin IDP Camp, Logo LGA, Benue State, Nigeria. ( 2022).
  • Created awareness particularly to young girls between the ages of 9 -14 on HPV vaccine that was launched to prevent HPV which causes cancer. (2023)
  • Implemented a Free Medical in the host community ( Ugondo Community) of ESLF Hospital to mark commencement of operations at the hospital. (2024)

EDUCATION
Literacy Promotion (Reading, Arts, Science, ICT)

  • Organised literacy, read aloud, talent development, creative arts expression and science skills improvement programmes for over 2000 basic and secondary level school children (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022) .
  • Through mobilised support, ESLF completed the building, furnishing and equipping of an e-Library/ICT Centre with 200 computers and accessories at Queen of the Rosary School Gboko, an all-girls school to promote girls’ competence in ICT and academic achievement.
  • Partnered Sevhage Literary and Development Initiative to host the first edition of the Benue Book and Arts Festival (2019)

Women/Girls Targeted Interventions

  • Carried out campaigns, stakeholder sessions and rallies to raise awareness and ignite mass action to address the issues of concern set as annual themes of focus during International Days of the Girl Child and International Women Day (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020)
  • ESLF has been mobilising resources to build a Girls Hostel at the Benue State University, Makurdi (2017)
  • Carried out campaigns on the 16 Days of Activism in Makurdi, Benue State. ( 2023).

Scholarship

  • Awarded scholarships to over 1000 secondary and university level students including those living with disabilities (2016, 2017, 2018 2019 and 2024).
  • Over 300 JAMB/UTME Registration forms bought for Benue Youth (2017)

Extra-Curricular Activities/Sports

  • Organized holiday sports coaching and competition for over 200 school children (2016)
  • Participated and presented a paper at during the GSS Ikpayongo Social Week (2017)
  • Supported and participated in the Benue Youth Arts and Cultural Festival (2017)

Vocational and Technical Skills Building/Strengthening

  • Ongoing construction of ESLF Entrepreneurship Academy in Naka, Gwer West LGA, Benue State.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT/AGRICULTURE
Empowerment Programmes

  • The annual Benue Women and Youth Economic/Entrepreneurship Summits held to build/strengthen knowledge and skills of about 6000 women and youth on opportunities for business in Benue and enterprise management through women and youth in 2016, 2017 and 2018
  • Over 1400 women and youth sponsored to acquire vocational skills training in chosen areas of their interest. Of this number, 4 youth were sponsored to undergo master vocational training in leather and fibre works in China and have since returned and stepped down skills to other youth.
  • Provided 18 most needy, trained beneficiaries with start-up packs to start their businesses.
  • Facilitated a NGN 100M loan facility, domiciled in a microfinance bank and currently being disbursed to micro small and medium enterprises involved in the agriculture value chain. Many women farmers across the State have accessed the loan with which they are engaged in various agric value chain activities.
  • Over 500 rural farmers in five communities of Raav, Taraku, Aondona, Howe and Angbarye benefit from inputs, and their skills built on modern farming techniques. Harvest was shared on agreed formula by the farmers on the one hand, and ESLF on the other hand. Crops cultivated included soyabeans, maize, sesame, cassava and rice.
  • Currently implementing an on-farm training of 50 farmers drawn from 5 rural farmer cooperative groups (mostly women) on ginger cultivation on ESLF’s Model Farm
  • Plans underway to pilot an organic farm
  • Trained 50 women and youth in 5 areas of food processing in partnership with the World Bank Center for Food Technology and Research, Benue State (2019)
  • Working on a USAID Funded project to enhance ease of doing agribusiness in Benue State with focus on rice, maize, soyabeans, cowpea and aquaculture value chains.
  • Implemented ESLF Football Tournament. (2022).
  • ESLF is currently implementing a UNDP Global Environment Facility Small Grant Programme ( UNDP GEF – SGP) funded project on Addressing Biodiversity Loss and Promoting Sustainable Traditional Medicinal Practices among the Ugbe Indigenous People of Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. (2024).

Governance

  • Conducted advocacy to public officials and political leaders in communities. This led to the appointment of 7 women as LGA Chairpersons out of the 23 LGAs in the State. This is the highest since the State was created in 1976. Due to our implemented high-level advocacy as build up to the 2020 Local Government elections in the State, we have 7 women elected as LG Council chairpersons.
  • We partnered international Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA- Benue), with funding from WEP to push for the passage into law of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Bill in Benue State.
  • ESLF Staff and Volunteers observed the 2019 general elections in different locations across the State under the platform of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR)
  • We are engaged in discussions relative to domesticating the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Bill in Benue State.
  • ESLF was involved at the inception and has been contributing to efforts at implementing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Project in Benue State. Project is implemented by International Alert, through UN Women with funding from the Norwegian Government.
  • Held town hall meeting and a walk with youth in partnership with the National Youth Network on HIV/AIDs (NYNETHA) to mark the International Youth Day with the theme: Youths Building Peace (2017)
  • Partnered other organisations to implement the Benue Youth Interactive Forum to mark the 2019 International Youth Day with the theme: Transforming Education. Over 400 youth drawn from the 276 Council wards of Benue State brainstormed and made recommendations on ways of improving education in the State
