ESLF BUILDS PEACE IN HOMES & COMMUNITIES THROUGH ITS EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES FOR WOMEN

The Programme Manager, Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF), Mr. Tine Agernor, has reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to empowering women through skill acquisition training and other educational programmes to prepare them for core leadership positions both in organisations and in the turf of politics.

Mr. Agernor stated this during a live, phone-in programme on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), a project of a Non-Governmental Organization, International Alert Nigeria in partnership with the United Nations Women Nigeria, to increase women’s effective participation and representation in peace-building and security processes in the society.

He said for three consecutive years (2016, 2017 and 2018), ESLF, using the twin-strategy of education and economic empowerment, organised the youth and women summit to strengthen the roles which women play in the society including that of peace building.

According to the ESLF Programme Manager, the Foundation’s trainings, emancipation and development programmes have made significant impact on women and have empowered them to contribute to sustainable peace in their individual homes and communities. He stressed that asides intelligence, which is required for success in leadership positions, adequate knowledge, wealth of experience, willingness to work, economic empowerment and compassion are traits also required to deliver on such leadership mandates.

Mr. Agernor who called for the full emancipation of women said this would enable them aspire to any level they wish to attain within boundaries of the acceptable norms of the society.

On her part, the ESLF Programme Officer, Governance, Ms Yemisi Ojo, who said women were no less competent than men, asserted that since women bear the brunt of war the more, it was only logical that they become core participants in the peace-building process as their peculiar experience would come in handy at the table of negotiation. She advised that society should tap into this vital female resource so it does not go to waste.

ELSF remains resolute in its commitment to skills acquisition training and economic empowerment programme for women in Benue State and position them for peace-building in homes and communities.
