QUEEN IORPUU Success Story
"THE SKILLS I LEARNT THROUGH E.S.L.F. IS ALREADY HELPING ME FINANCIALLY…I USED TO SUFFER LOW SELF ESTEEM BUT THE MENTORING I GOT HERE CHANGED ALL THAT", QUEEN IORPUU AFFIRMED! In 2017, Queen Iorpuu passed out with flying colours from secondary school but, bogged down by financial constraints, she has been unable to proceed to an institution of higher learning to further her education. Therefore when she overhead some girls talking some weeks ago about the ESLF skills acquisition training under UNFPA's Safe Spaces Management Project at Ugba in Logo L.G.A. of Benue State, she instantly saw the chance to do something meaningful with her life. Of course, without hesitation, she grabbed the chance with both hands and enrolled. During the interview, Queen confidently declared: "Now I can bake cake, make liquid soap, vaseline, perfume, chin-chin and so many other things"! Asked if the programme had been of any benefit to her so far, she was quick to admit that: "Financially, it is helping me a lot already. I bought chemicals for making vaseline and containers for N2000, then produced and packaged the Vaseline which I sold for N3500. That means I made a profit of N1500 for my effort"! Having raked in almost a hundred percent profit from her Vaseline production, Queen feels elated and highly motivated about the venture. She expressed confidence that she could make more money if only she could get some assistance to scale up her production. Simply listening to Queen speak, you cannot help but get struck with the conviction that she has got great plans to build a business empire out of her newfound knowledge: "After this graduation, I will do a proper launching. Then I will lay out my plans not only to increase production but also formally present myself as a trainer in skills acquisition." Perhaps her conviction to become a professional trainer came from the opportunity that trailed her right to the spot where she was selling her product. According to her, "One of the customers who bought the Vaseline saw that it was good so he asked me if I actually produced it myself. I told him, 'Yes, I did'! So immediately he contracted me to come and teach the girls at his church at an agreed fee. I later went and trained the girls at the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Tyowanye which is in Buruku Local Government Area." Before now a small time trader in shea butter, shower caps and other small items, this enterprising young lady said she had only come to Ugba to help her mother at the farm when she heard about the skills acquisition training and then went for it. Like a hungry predator keen on conquering its prey, this self-motivated Queen is poised to conquer her world as she hungrily follows available opportunities with the precision of a sniffer dog on the trail of a suspicious scent. Queen seems all set to rule her world of business in times to come and with just a little more nudge in terms of capacity building and financial enablement; her business kingdom would, no doubt, begin to conquer several frontiers, become strongly established and flourish well in no distant time!EVELYN ANGULE Success Story
"I HEARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN CHURCH AND CAME TO JOIN THE TRAINING. NOW I CAN MAKE LIQUID SOAP, PERFUME, CHIN-CHIN, WEDDING CAKE AND SO ON" DECLARED EVELYN ANGULE WHO LIVES WITH DISABILITY. She might have limited oratorical skills and even struggles to move about like others normally do due to a physical challenge she has to put up with, but Evelyn Angule is apparently determined that nothing could stop her from achieving her dream in life. "We were in church when the announcement came that there would be skill acquisition training. I decided to come here and enroll and was taught how to do so many things like liquid soap, perfume, cake and chin-chin and now I can produce them all," she enthused. Evelyn who is a J.S. 2 student of God's Time Secondary School, Ugba said she needs help to be able to help herself and help her indigent mother who, in her own little way, has been really struggling to help out with the financial demands of her studies.MIMI MSUGHTER SUCCESS STORIES
"IN FUTURE, I'LL LIKE TO BE A NURSE...WITH THE ESLF TRAINING, I CAN NOW WORK AND HELP MY FATHER TO RAISE MY SCHOOL FEES" SAYS 13-YEAR-OLD MIMI MSUGHTER. "This training is very good and I learnt a lot from it. In fact, I am very, very happy self because after the training, I was able to make some chin-chin which I sold in my school during break period and at Ugba Market. I then used the gain I made to buy my school books"! This was the profound response by an overly excited Mimidoo Msughter, a 13-year-old resident of Ugba Town in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State when asked how she felt about the training she underwent at the E.S.L.F-implemented programme on mentoring, vocational skills training and psychosocial support under the UNFPA-sponsored Safe Spaces Management Project at Abeda/Ugba and Anyiin. Mimi (as she is fondly called), is a brilliant and quite confident J.S. 2 student of God's Time Secondary School, Ugba and lives with her parents who are both peasant farmers. She admitted that the training impacted her life so much that she was still counting the gains. According to her, the opportunity to be trained suddenly came one fateful day when she was surprisingly asked alongside few other female students to come out in front of others. Filled with apprehension, she initially thought they had been singled out to go and do some tedious work somewhere. Instead, she said they were led to the Safe Spaces Centre which is just a stone throw from her school. "There we were told about the skills acquisition training and my heart was filled with joy as the facilitator explained what we were there to learn." Mimi disclosed how terrible she once felt when her father could not pay her school fees one certain term, asserting that if she had acquired these skills at that time, she would have been in the position to produce something to sell and raise her fees. "But now that I have learnt these skills, I can be doing it to buy some little, little things for myself. I can even help my father to raise and pay my school fees"! Lamenting the fact that she is constrained by finances and can neither produce some of the things she had learnt nor produce enough quantity of the one she could produce, she expressed hope that she could get some funding to support her effort. Mimi also explained how the mentoring sessions on self esteem, personal hygiene and resilience skills helped to build her up as an individual: "Before now I used to talk to people anyhow but after this training, I now have more respect for other people." Unlike before, Mimi said she now gives listening ears to others whether or not she agrees with their point of view. She expressed profound appreciation to ESLF and UNFPA and urged them to extend the training to others as well. Mimi, who brimmed with so much optimism, expressed hope that with some support, the vocational skills she had acquired through ESLF and UNFPA could help her achieve her ambition to become a qualified nurse in future.BLESSING EMMANUEL – ESLF/UNFPA BENEFICIARY
